Beyond the Plate: AI Vehicle Fingerprints and Mass Tracking

The video above raises a question that deserves everyday attention: what happens when license plate readers stop needing the license plate at all?

From plate numbers to vehicle fingerprints

For years, ALPR systems worked in a fairly simple way — cameras captured plate images, software read the characters, and that text was stored in a database you could search like a spreadsheet. That’s still how most people imagine these systems working.

But the technology described in the video reflects a broader, well-documented shift in the ALPR industry: instead of just matching plate text, modern systems increasingly use AI models and ‘vector’ search to match vehicles by their overall appearance — color, make, model, body damage, roof racks, bumper stickers, even a cracked window. This is often marketed as ‘vehicle fingerprinting’ or similar search.

Why this matters more than it sounds

A plate number is something you can often change, obscure, or swap when you sell a car. A vehicle’s visual signature is much harder to alter. If a camera network can identify and track a specific car by its look alone, then covering or changing a plate no longer meaningfully protects your movements from being logged.

It also lowers the bar for surveillance. Investigators no longer need a clear, well-lit shot of a plate to build a trail of where a vehicle has been — a blurry photo of a distinctive car might be enough. That expands what counts as ‘trackable’ data, often without new laws or public debate catching up to the capability.

The accountability gap

Most of the public debate around ALPRs has focused on plate retention windows, data sharing between agencies, and who can query the database. Vehicle-fingerprint search raises the same questions, but the policies governing it are often unclear or unwritten. Communities considering an ALPR contract with Flock Safety or similar vendors should ask directly: does this system search by visual similarity, not just plate text? How long is that data kept, and who can run those searches?
