Flock & ALPR Cameras in Asheville, North Carolina

Volunteers have reported 33 automated license plate readers in and around Asheville — cameras that log every passing plate with a time and location.

On the record · Contract Canceled

Asheville is on the record here. Asheville City Council voted 5–2 on August 25, 2026 to authorize the city manager to terminate the city’s Flock contract, suspend access, searching, and sharing of Flock data, and remove the 11 city-operated automated license-plate readers. WLOS and Carolina Public Press covered the vote. HOA, school, and other Buncombe County Flock cameras outside the city contract remain. Axon plate readers remain under discussion as a possible replacement.

What’s watching Asheville

These aren’t red-light cameras. Automated license plate readers like Flock Safety’s photograph every plate that passes, log the time and place, and store it in a searchable database that’s often shared far beyond Asheville — here’s where that data goes. Counts cover cameras reported closest to Asheville (within ~20 km), so nearby towns share the same corridors. Spot one that’s missing? Report it on DeFlock.
