What are Flock cameras? Safety vs. Security - why it’s worth paying attention.

The short version: A newcomer YouTube channel breaks down what Flock cameras actually do, and the safety-vs-security framing is exactly the conversation your neighborhood needs.

Our Take

Credit to The Alma Archive Room for tackling a question a lot of folks are only now starting to ask: what are these cameras that showed up on the pole at the end of your street? The video's framing — safety vs. security — gets at the core tension we talk about constantly. Flock Safety markets its ALPR network as a crime-fighting tool, but the same system that logs every passing plate, time-stamped and searchable, is also a ready-made tracking infrastructure with almost no public oversight over who gets to query it, for what reason, or how long the data sticks around.

That's the part that rarely makes it into the sales pitch: these aren't just cameras watching for stolen cars. They're building a permanent, networked record of where everyone drives, and that record can be pulled by any agency with access — local police, federal partners, or whoever your city council quietly signed a data-sharing agreement with. "Smarter than you think" is right, but smarter doesn't mean safer for the people being watched.

If a video like this got you wondering whether there's a Flock camera already clocking your commute, check our camera map to see what's been documented near you, and head to our take-action page if you want to push back at a city council meeting or file a records request.
