Flock Safety Cameras Are DISAPPEARING, What’s Next Could be WORSE

RedLightNews · 2 months ago

The short version: RedLightNews flags Flock cameras vanishing in some spots, but warns the replacement tech could track us even harder — we agree the fight isn't over.

Our Take

RedLightNews's short deserves a beat of attention: yes, some Flock Safety cameras are coming down in certain towns after public pushback, but don't mistake that for a win against the surveillance state. Companies like Flock don't just fold up shop when a city council gets cold feet — they pivot, rebrand, or upgrade to something with even less oversight and more capability. "Disappearing" cameras can just mean the next generation is quieter, cheaper, and harder to spot on a pole.

This is the pattern we've seen over and over in the ALPR fight: local wins are real, but the industry treats them as a rounding error, not a retreat. If a network gets torn out in one county, the vendor just resets the pitch in the next one over, often with new features like AI-based "threat scoring" or expanded data-sharing agreements that make the old cameras look quaint by comparison. Public attention has to outlast the news cycle, or we just end up trading a visible problem for an invisible one.

Check our camera map to see what's actually deployed near you right now, and if you want to push back before the next generation of trackers goes up unchallenged, our take-action page has concrete steps for your city council meeting.
