Flock Cameras: Your Ticket to the Truman Show? #shorts

3RD SHIFT With ABREW · 1 week ago

The short version: A short from 3rd Shift With ABREW spotlights how Flock cameras are quietly expanding from plate-reading to traffic enforcement, with nearly 500 in a single county.

Our Take

Credit to 3rd Shift With ABREW for putting a number on what a lot of us already suspected: Flock's footprint isn't growing one camera at a time, it's growing by the hundreds, county by county, often with little public debate. The jump from "we're just reading plates for stolen cars" to "we're issuing speeding tickets" is exactly the mission creep privacy advocates warned about. Once the infrastructure exists, the use cases multiply.

That's the real danger here. These systems weren't sold to the public as automated traffic courts, they were sold as tools to catch violent criminals. Every new function tacked on afterward, speed enforcement, immigration checks, whatever comes next, happens without the original public buy-in. The Truman Show comparison in the title is a little tongue-in-cheek, but the underlying point lands: a county wallpapered with nearly 500 cameras means your daily movements are being logged whether you've done anything wrong or not.
