Flock cameras are not for us #gavinnewsom #benshapiro #kathyhochul #gretchenwhitmer #elizabethwarren

WNY 44 · 1 week ago

The short version: WNY 44 asks the one question Flock and local officials rarely answer honestly: why do these cameras exist in our towns at all.

Our Take

Credit to WNY 44 for cutting through the noise with a simple, honest question: has anyone actually explained why a given town needs a network of license plate readers logging every car that passes? That question gets dodged constantly, replaced with vague talk of "public safety" that never comes with real data on outcomes, retention limits, or who else can access the footage.

The video's tag list is telling — pulling in figures from across the political spectrum, from Newsom and Hochul to Shapiro and Warren. Mass surveillance isn't a red or blue issue. Flock's cameras don't check party registration before they scan a plate, and the data they collect can end up in the hands of agencies far outside the town that installed them. When commentators who agree on almost nothing can agree that this deserves scrutiny, that should tell local councils something.

If your town has Flock cameras and you're still waiting for someone to explain why, start by checking our map to see what's already been installed near you, then use our take-action guide to start asking your local officials the hard questions directly.
