I spent 7 days evading America’s 82 MILLION surveillance cameras

Chris the Producer · 6 months ago

The short version: Chris the Producer's week-long stunt to dodge 82 million cameras and Flock's ALPR network is absurd theater with a dead-serious point: you cannot opt out of America's surveillance grid.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: Chris the Producer turned a genuinely alarming statistic into a week of bedsheets and a TV strapped to his back, and it's a smarter piece of advocacy than another dry policy explainer could ever be. The stunt format is funny, but the underlying math isn't — 82 million cameras, Ring doorbells on every third porch, municipal CCTV grids, and roughly 100,000 Flock Safety ALPRs logging plates in thousands of towns that never held a public vote on it.

The most honest moment in the premise is the punchline: the gear fooled the cameras but not his neighbors. That's the whole surveillance economy in miniature. You can spoof facial recognition for an afternoon, but you can't spoof a Flock camera mounted on a pole that reads every plate, every direction, every day, and quietly stacks that data into a searchable history of everywhere your car has been. There's no bedsheet for that. It's infrastructure, not a costume problem.

That's exactly why we built the map — so you can see whether that infrastructure is already sitting on your street. If it is, the next move isn't a stunt, it's showing up to a city council meeting with the facts. Our take-action page has the playbook for doing that.
