Neighbor creates petition against flock cameras in Murfreesboro

WKRN News 2 · 4 months ago

The short version: A Murfreesboro resident is pushing back on Flock Safety cameras with a neighborhood petition, and WKRN News 2's report shows local pushback is spreading beyond big cities.

Our Take

WKRN News 2 captured something we're seeing crop up again and again: ordinary residents deciding they've had enough of unaccountable camera networks going up on their streets without a real conversation first. A neighbor in Murfreesboro didn't wait for city council to act — they started a petition, which is exactly the kind of grassroots friction that makes HOAs, police departments, and city governments slow down and actually justify these contracts.

These cameras log every vehicle that passes, building a timestamped record of who drives where and when, all without a warrant. Most residents never got a vote on whether that tradeoff was worth it, and most don't know the data can be queried by other agencies far outside their town. Murfreesboro is just the latest reminder that the rollout of ALPR networks is happening quietly, neighborhood by neighborhood, unless someone speaks up.
