AR couple arrested after Flock camera misidentification, some cities ditching the cameras

arkansasonline · 2 months ago

The short version: A wrongful arrest tied to a Flock misread pushed Searcy, Arkansas to drop Flock Safety, making it the sixth Arkansas town to bail on the cameras.

Our Take

This is the nightmare scenario critics of ALPR networks have been warning about for years: an algorithm and a camera misread a plate, and real people end up in handcuffs. Credit to arkansasonline and reporter Grant Lancaster for tracking how one bad match in Searcy, Arkansas turned into a wrongful arrest — and then into a City Council vote to rip out the Flock Safety system entirely. Searcy isn't an outlier either; the video notes it's at least the sixth Arkansas city or town to end or suspend its contract.

That pattern matters. Flock's whole pitch to local governments rests on the idea that these cameras are a low-risk force multiplier — quietly scanning every plate, run through databases, no muss no fuss. But 'low-risk' evaporates fast when a false positive puts innocent people in a squad car. Once that happens in your town, the political calculus changes overnight, and apparently it's happening enough in Arkansas that officials are choosing to walk away rather than defend the tech.

If you want to see whether a Flock camera is watching your commute, check our map, and if your city council hasn't had this conversation yet, now's the time to make them — head to take action for tools to push back.
