Patriot shows Flock cameras track him and his PHONE as he walks by

Orwell Day · 1 month ago

The short version: A walking demo from creator Orwell Day pushes back on the 'just license plates' defense, showing Flock-style cameras picking up far more than plates as a pedestrian passes by.

Our Take

Orwell Day's video cuts through a talking point we hear constantly from Flock boosters: that these cameras "only read license plates." By walking past a camera on foot and showing what gets captured, the video makes a simple but important point — the hardware and the backend are built to do a lot more than ALPR. Vehicle fingerprinting, object detection, and the quiet accumulation of pedestrian data aren't hypothetical features tucked away in a future update; they're part of the system's design philosophy, which is to extract as much metadata as possible from every pass of the lens.

This matters because the public debate around Flock has largely been anchored to the narrowest possible framing — plates in, plates out, for solving car theft. That framing lets departments and city councils approve contracts without reckoning with what a statewide or nationwide network of always-on sensors actually means once it's logging people, not just cars. When a camera can tie a face, a gait, or a phone's presence to a timestamped location, you've moved from traffic enforcement into a de facto tracking grid, built with zero public vote on whether that tradeoff was worth it.

Credit to Orwell Day for doing the legwork to demonstrate this rather than just asserting it. If you want to see whether your own neighborhood has been wired into this network, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not wait for your city council to notice, our take-action page has the tools to start pushing back now.
