This will be your FUTURE if you don't STOP it

Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency · 3 months ago

The short version: A mass-surveillance watchdog channel warns that today's tracking tech, left unchecked, becomes tomorrow's default reality — and ALPR networks are part of that trajectory.

Our Take

The video's broader point — that convenience tech and public safety pitches can quietly normalize infrastructure we'd never accept if it were proposed outright — tracks with exactly what we've watched happen with license plate readers. Flock Safety and similar vendors didn't ask cities to approve a nationwide vehicle-tracking network; they asked one HOA, one police department, one city council at a time to approve a few cameras to fight porch piracy or catch a stolen car. Multiply that by thousands of jurisdictions and you get a de facto surveillance grid with no single vote, no unified oversight, and no real off switch.

Credit to the Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency channel for keeping the lens on how these systems compound — ALPRs, digital ID, and data-sharing agreements aren't separate stories, they're pieces of the same infrastructure, and each one makes the next easier to justify. The 'future' framing matters because by the time people feel the weight of it, the cameras are already bolted to the poles and the data is already flowing to private databases and federal agencies.

If you want to see how close that future already is in your neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not wait for it to arrive uninvited, our take-action page has concrete steps for pushing back at the local level, where these decisions actually get made.
