Credit to Beer Garden Mafia for doing what most city councils won't: actually sitting down and talking through what Flock Safety cameras do before the vote, not after. The fact that a local podcast is asking "yes or no?" about ALPRs is a sign this conversation is spreading past the usual privacy-advocate circles and into bar-stool conversations in small towns — which is exactly where it needs to happen, because that's where these systems get approved with the least scrutiny.
"Neutral" is a fine framing for a podcast, but we'd push back gently on the premise that this is a balanced coin-flip issue. Flock's own pitch to police departments is that the cameras log every plate, every vehicle, every time, and store that data for law enforcement to query later — indefinitely turning your town into a place where your movements are a searchable record, whether or not you've done anything wrong. That's not a neutral technology; it's a policy choice with real tradeoffs, and the burden should be on departments to justify it, not on residents to prove harm.
