EPSO to discontinue Flock safety cameras

FOX21 News · 3 days ago

The short version: FOX21 News reports that El Paso County's Sheriff's Office is pulling the plug on its Flock Safety ALPR cameras, a rare reversal worth watching.

Our Take

Credit to FOX21 News for flagging this one: a Colorado sheriff's office walking back its Flock Safety contract is the kind of story that doesn't happen nearly often enough. Most of the time we're writing about agencies expanding their camera networks, not shutting them down, so when a department decides the juice isn't worth the squeeze, it deserves attention.

We don't know yet whether this is about cost, performance, public pushback, or something else entirely — FOX21 doesn't give us all the details, and we won't pretend to fill in blanks we can't verify. But every time a local government steps back from blanket license-plate tracking, it's a small reminder that these systems are not inevitable. They were sold to taxpayers and councils as low-key tools, and in plenty of places people are starting to ask harder questions about who's watching the watchers.

If you're in El Paso County or anywhere else wondering what's actually pointed at your street, check our camera map to see what's been documented near you, and if you want to push back on a Flock contract in your own town, our take-action page has a starting point.
