AI Surveillance at Kennesaw State: Students Speak Out! #shorts

PrivacyPortal · 3 months ago

The short version: A PrivacyPortal short features Kennesaw State students reacting to AI surveillance on campus, a reminder that automated tracking is spreading well beyond city streets.

Our Take

Credit to PrivacyPortal for putting a mic in front of actual students instead of just talking about surveillance in the abstract. College campuses are quietly becoming some of the densest surveillance environments in the country — ID swipes, Wi-Fi logging, camera networks, and in a growing number of cases, license plate readers covering parking lots and entry roads. Students often have no idea how many systems are watching them move through a single day.

This matters because campuses are a preview of what 'normal' surveillance looks like for the next generation. If 19-year-olds shrug off AI-driven tracking as just part of how a university operates, that same posture follows them into neighborhoods, workplaces, and city streets where Flock Safety and similar ALPR networks are multiplying with little public debate or oversight.

We'd rather people ask the harder question these students are starting to raise: who has access to this data, how long is it kept, and who decided it was fine to collect in the first place. Check our map to see what's already deployed near you, and visit take-action if you want to push back before it becomes just another thing everyone assumes is normal.
