Flock camera IDs wrong driver in deadly hit and run in Florida, leads to wrongful arrest

WCJB TV20 News · 3 days ago

The short version: WCJB TV20 News reports a Florida woman was wrongfully arrested in a fatal hit-and-run after a Flock Safety ALPR allegedly misidentified her vehicle.

Our Take

Credit to WCJB TV20 News for getting Lindsey Isaacs on camera to tell her side of this story. A fatal hit-and-run is about as serious as it gets, and so is getting arrested for one you didn't commit. When automated license plate readers get it wrong, the consequences aren't abstract — they land on real people, with handcuffs attached.

This is the core problem with treating ALPR hits as probable cause instead of a lead to verify. Flock's system is marketed as near-infallible, but plate reads can be wrong, vehicle matches can be sloppy, and databases can be stale. Once a camera says 'match,' it's easy for an investigation to stop looking for alternatives and start building a case around a hunch dressed up as data. Isaacs reportedly paid the price for that shortcut.

Every one of these stories should make departments and city councils ask harder questions before signing new Flock contracts, and make residents ask what's already watching their streets.
