This Tech Saved A Million Lives
The short version: Neural Nexus touts Flock Safety's crime-solving stats, but a 'million lives saved' headline glosses over the privacy costs of a nationwide plate-tracking network.
Our Take
Neural Nexus deserves credit for digging into Flock Safety's numbers, but the headline framing — a tidy million lives saved — is exactly the marketing narrative Flock's PR team wants repeated. Clearance stats and "missing persons" counts are easy to cite and hard to independently verify, since they come straight from the company's own dashboards and press releases, not from outside audits. When the only entity measuring a surveillance tool's success is the vendor selling it, that's a red flag, not a victory lap.
What rarely makes it into these feel-good recaps is the tradeoff: thousands of ALPR cameras quietly logging every passing plate, building location histories on millions of people who've never been suspected of anything, often shared across agencies and states with little public oversight. A tool can help solve real cases and still represent a dangerous expansion of mass surveillance infrastructure — those two things aren't mutually exclusive, no matter how the video's title frames it.
