Your Movements Tracked Mass Surveillance or Public Safety

Shasta Unfiltered · 6 months ago

The short version: Shasta Unfiltered digs into Redding's ALPR rollout and asks the question local officials rarely answer: who's watching the watchers?

Our Take

Credit to Shasta Unfiltered for putting a local lens on a national problem. Redding and Shasta County are just the latest communities to discover that a few hundred cameras bolted to poles can quietly build a time-stamped record of everywhere you drive — no warrant, no judge, no real public debate before the contract gets signed.

The "mass surveillance or public safety" framing in the title is exactly right, because those two things aren't mutually exclusive — that's the whole problem. Flock and similar ALPR systems get sold as a narrow crime-fighting tool, but the data doesn't stay narrow. It gets pooled, shared across agencies and states, and kept far longer than most residents realize, turning routine commutes into a searchable dossier.

If you're in Shasta County or anywhere else in the country, check our camera map to see what's already watching your street, and visit our take-action page for ways to push back before the next contract renews itself.
