Flock Cameras Think You Are On Your Phone While Driving Just For Having A Phone On Your Lap

The short version: A creator shows Flock-style camera AI apparently flagging a phone merely resting on someone's lap as 'distracted driving,' raising fresh questions about automated accusation without human judgment.

Our Take

Credit to Seth Summers (Kingdom Culture w/ SethSummersTV) for catching this on camera: a phone just sitting on a driver's lap allegedly tripping an automated "distracted driving" flag. We can't verify Flock's internal detection logic from a single clip, but the concern it raises is exactly the one we keep hammering on — these systems are being sold as neutral, objective tools, yet they're pattern-matching algorithms making judgment calls that used to require a cop actually seeing you do something wrong.

The difference matters. A human officer who pulls you over for texting has to articulate probable cause and can be cross-examined on what they actually saw. A camera network that silently tags your plate or your vehicle as "distracted" based on an object's position creates a paper trail of suspicion with no officer, no witness, and no accountability for a false read. If that flag follows your plate into a database, gets shared across agencies, or shapes who gets pulled aside for a closer look, a false positive isn't just annoying — it's a permanent, unreviewable black mark generated by a machine.

This is the broader problem with letting automated license plate readers quietly expand their job description from "read a plate" to "judge behavior." Nobody voted on that expansion, and most residents have no idea it's happening in their own neighborhood. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your streets, and hit take-action if you want to push back on how these systems get deployed and audited where you live.
