The Surveillance Giant Replacing Flock

Tymanthefirst · 2 months ago

The short version: Tymanthefirst spotlights Axon quietly scaling up its own ALPR and AI surveillance network, suggesting the Flock debate is only half the fight.

Our Take

Credit to Tymanthefirst for pulling focus away from Flock Safety for a minute and pointing the camera at Axon — the company that already owns the Taser and bodycam market and is now stacking ALPR, drone, and AI analytics products on top of it. If the video's thesis holds up, we're not looking at Flock getting replaced so much as surveillance infrastructure consolidating under fewer, bigger vendors with even deeper pockets and tighter police relationships.

This matters because the public fight over license plate readers has mostly been fought company by company, city council by city council. That's already exhausting. If Axon is building a parallel or successor network while everyone's attention is locked on Flock, communities could end up re-litigating the same consent, retention, and data-sharing fights all over again under a different logo — or worse, not realizing it's happening until the cameras are already bolted to the poles.

We'll be digging into Axon's footprint the same way we track Flock's. In the meantime, check our map to see what's already watching your streets, and use our take-action page if you want to push back before the next surveillance giant sets up shop in your town.
