San Francisco is strengthening public safety by centralizing information

Flock · 7 months ago

The short version: Flock's own promotional video touts San Francisco's ALPR-and-drone 'centralization' as a public-safety win, but it's company marketing, not independent reporting.

Our Take

Let's be clear about what this video is: a Flock Safety ad, narrated in Flock's own words, about a city buying more Flock Safety products. When the company selling the surveillance network also produces the case study celebrating it, you're not getting journalism — you're getting a sales pitch dressed up as a public-safety success story.

The pitch itself is worth noting, though. "Centralizing information" and pairing ALPR feeds with drone footage means one company's cameras are increasingly stitched together with aerial surveillance, creating a more complete picture of where you drive, when, and now potentially who's watching you from above. San Francisco residents should ask who controls that merged data, how long it's kept, and which agencies — local, state, federal — get access once it's all centralized in one dashboard.

None of this is really about solving individual crimes; it's about normalizing a surveillance architecture that expands quietly, city by city, contract by contract. Check our camera map to see what's already watching in your area, and visit take action to find out how to push back before centralization becomes the default.
