Your Spending Can Get You Pulled Over πŸ¦ŠπŸš” #DHS #Surveillance #Privacy

The short version: Sly Decodes breaks down a 404 Media report on PITT, a secretive Border Patrol unit that reportedly uses spending data to flag and pull people over.

Our Take

Credit to Sly Decodes for surfacing the 404 Media reporting on PITT, the Predictive Intelligence Targeting Team. If the reporting holds up, this is the logical next step in a surveillance pipeline we've been tracking for years: license plate readers tell the government where your car has been, and now purchase data apparently helps decide whether that car gets stopped at all. Separate data streams, same goal β€” build a profile on someone who hasn't been charged with anything.

This is exactly why we keep hammering on ALPR networks specifically. Flock cameras and similar systems generate the location half of this equation quietly, continuously, and usually without a warrant. Once your movements are logged next to your financial habits, 'predictive' policing starts to look a lot like permission to stop anyone the algorithm doesn't like. The scary part isn't one data source β€” it's how easily agencies can stitch sources together once the infrastructure exists.

If you want to see how much of that infrastructure is already sitting in your own neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back on it locally, our take-action page has concrete steps.
