The FLOCK Psyop is Working…

Alessi · 8 hours ago

The short version: Alessi Allaman argues Flock Safety's PR machine is successfully normalizing ALPR surveillance, and we think that's exactly the danger worth naming.

Our Take

Credit to Alessi Allaman for putting a blunt label on something we've watched happen for years: the slow, deliberate normalization of automated license plate readers through friendly press releases, "public safety" branding, and local news segments that never ask hard questions. Calling it a psyop is provocative, but the underlying point lands — Flock Safety has built a marketing operation as sophisticated as its camera network, and it's working. Most drivers have no idea how many times a day their plate gets logged, stored, and cross-referenced.

That's the real battle here, not just the hardware bolted to a pole. Once a community accepts the framing that more cameras automatically equals more safety, the conversation about data retention, third-party access, and mission creep never happens. Police departments quietly expand contracts, out-of-state agencies query local databases, and nobody voted on any of it. The psychological normalization is the product just as much as the camera itself.
