Flock Safety Cameras: Surveillance or Safety? #shorts
The short version: A short from STS Technologies pits 'surveillance' against 'safety' in the Flock Safety debate while plugging its own ALPR-awareness merch.
Our Take
The title says it all: "Surveillance or Safety?" — as if those are the only two options, and as if Flock Safety hasn't spent years selling cities on the idea that mass license-plate tracking is just a neutral tool for catching bad guys. STS Technologies, the channel behind this short, also sells "FlockYou" gear aimed at raising awareness of these cameras, so there's a clear point of view here. That's fine — we'd rather people talk about this openly than let it install quietly behind a stop sign.
The real issue isn't whether ALPRs can help solve the occasional crime. It's that every plate read, whether you're a suspect or just someone driving to church, gets logged, timestamped, and stored — often shared across agencies and states with little public oversight. A 15-second short can't capture how that data trail builds over months and years into a map of everyone's movements, but it's a fair entry point for people who've never noticed the cameras on their commute.
If this video makes you start spotting Flock cameras in your own neighborhood, don't stop at noticing — check our camera map to see what's already been documented near you, and head to our take-action page for ways to push back at the local level, where these decisions actually get made.
