Abbott Pauses State Funding for Flock Cameras
The short version: Texas Scorecard reports Gov. Abbott ordered a pause on state funding for Flock ALPR cameras, a notable crack in the surveillance status quo.
Our Take
When a Republican governor in a deep-red state starts hitting pause on Flock funding, that's news worth paying attention to. Texas Scorecard's report suggests Abbott's office is at least acknowledging what civil liberties advocates have been saying for years: these camera networks expanded fast, with little oversight, and even less public debate about who gets access to the data and why.
We don't know yet whether this is a genuine reckoning or a temporary political timeout before funding resumes under a different label. Pauses can be reversed, rebranded, or quietly routed around through local budgets and federal grants that don't require the same sign-off. Flock's business model depends on cities and counties finding workarounds, so don't assume the cameras are coming down just because one funding spigot got shut off.
Credit to Texas Scorecard for flagging the move. If you want to see how many Flock and other ALPR cameras are already running in your area, check out our map, and if you'd rather not wait on state officials to act, our take-action page has tools for pushing back at the local level.
