How Flock Cameras Are Helping Solve Crime in Los Angeles

Flock · 6 months ago

The short version: Flock's own promotional video touts LA crime wins, but it's company marketing, not independent proof that blanket ALPR surveillance is worth the privacy cost.

Our Take

This one isn't an outside journalist or a skeptical city council — it's Flock Safety's own channel, selling itself. That matters. When the company that profits from every camera installed also produces the trust-building case study, you should read the "movement on serious cases" talk the same way you'd read any ad: with a healthy dose of salt. Recovered stolen cars make for a tidy anecdote, but anecdotes aren't audits, and Los Angeles hasn't exactly published independent data showing these networks reduce crime more than they expand constant, warrantless tracking of everyone who drives through them.

What gets left out of polished promo reels like this is the scale question: once a city says yes to Flock, every plate, every car, every trip gets logged and stored, searchable by any agency with access — not just the handful of headline cases chosen to make the pitch. LA already has a sprawling patchwork of these readers, and the public record on misuse, data sharing with federal agencies, and retention policies is a lot messier than a success story suggests.

If you live in or near Los Angeles, don't take the marketing department's word for it — check our camera map to see what's actually been deployed near you, and visit our take-action page if you want to push your city council for real transparency instead of a highlight reel.
