Flock Safety Cameras: Public Safety or Surveillance? #shorts

Auditing Reno 911 · 2 months ago

The short version: A citizen auditor's Carson City short asks the right question: are Flock cameras keeping us safe, or just logging everyone's life by default?

Our Take

Credit to Auditing Reno 911 for pointing a lens back at the lens. That's the whole game with Flock Safety: the company insists these are narrowly-targeted public safety tools, but the hardware doesn't know the difference between a wanted felon and someone driving to church. Every plate that passes gets read, timestamped, and stored — innocent until proven interesting to a database query.

Carson City is just one more dot on a map that now spans thousands of communities, most of which never held a real public debate before city council signed the contract. The "short" format undersells how big this is: once a town says yes to Flock, it's opted every driver into a rolling record of their movements, retained for weeks or months and searchable by any agency with access — including, in plenty of documented cases, agencies far outside the host city's jurisdiction.

If you're in Carson City or anywhere else wondering what's watching your commute, check our camera map to see what's already deployed near you, and if you want to push back at the local level, our take-action page has the tools to start asking your council the questions this video is already raising.
