Michigan Plate Readers Can Reveal Your Routine

The Mitten Grip · 2 months ago

The short version: The Mitten Grip breaks down how Michigan's networked ALPRs quietly stitch single scans into a full pattern-of-life, no facial recognition required.

Our Take

Credit to The Mitten Grip for cutting through the usual "it's just a license plate" defense that Flock and its police partners love to lean on. One scan really is nothing. But a grid of cameras logging every pass, timestamped and location-tagged, turns into something else entirely: a record of where you live, where you work, who you visit, and how predictable your life is. That's the real product being built here, and Michigan drivers in Macomb, Oakland, and the surrounding counties mentioned in this video are living inside that network right now, whether they know it or not.

This is the core danger we keep hammering on — mass ALPR surveillance doesn't need facial recognition to identify you. Your routine does the identifying for it. A car that shows up at the same church, clinic, union hall, or ex's house on a schedule is a dossier, and nobody has to show probable cause to start compiling it. Once that data sits in a shared database, it doesn't stay local, and it doesn't stay accountable to the community that's being watched.

If you're in Michigan or anywhere else, check our camera map to see what's already tracking your streets, and head to our take-action page for ways to push back at your city council or county commission before this network gets any bigger.
