The DeFlock Movement: Are You For It or Against It?

Daytona Beach Lawyer · 2 months ago

The short version: A retired homicide detective turned defense lawyer asks whether ALPR surveillance is worth the tradeoff, and that question alone is a win for public debate.

Our Take

When a former homicide detective who now works criminal defense asks his audience point blank whether they're "for or against" DeFlock, it's a sign this conversation has moved well past activist circles. Patrick McGeehan, the Daytona Beach lawyer behind the video, isn't pretending to have all the answers — he's framing automated license plate readers as a live constitutional question, which is exactly the kind of scrutiny this technology has dodged for years by being installed quietly on utility poles and HOA entrances.

That framing matters. Flock Safety and similar vendors have sold ALPR networks to thousands of communities on the promise of solving crime, while giving almost no public accounting of how long plate data is stored, who can query it, or how often those searches have nothing to do with the case that justified the camera in the first place. Hearing someone with law enforcement credibility say the debate "deserves informed discussion" is a small crack in the usual blanket assumption that more cameras automatically equals more safety.

We'd push the question further than for-or-against: it's about consent, transparency, and whether your town council ever actually voted on this. If you want to see what's already watching your plates, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back locally, our take-action page has the tools to start.
