RPD license plate reader technology helps locate missing elderly man

WFXR NEWS · 5 months ago

The short version: WFXR News reports Roanoke PD credits its Flock camera network with locating a missing elderly man, the kind of feel-good story departments love to spotlight.

Our Take

Credit to WFXR News for getting this story in front of Roanoke viewers, because stories like this are exactly how ALPR programs get sold to the public. A missing elderly man found, a grateful family, a police department that looks like the hero — it's a clean narrative, and it's the one departments want you to remember every time someone questions why hundreds of cameras are logging every car that passes through town.

What rarely makes the broadcast is the other side of the ledger: the millions of plate scans collected on totally innocent people who were never missing, never suspected of anything, just driving to work or the grocery store. One success story doesn't erase the fact that this same infrastructure builds a permanent, searchable record of where everyone goes, available to an expanding list of agencies with little transparency about how long it's kept or who else gets to query it. Roanoke's cameras don't switch off after finding someone — they keep running, on everybody, all the time.

If you want to see how far this network stretches beyond Roanoke, check our camera map, and if you think your city council should be asking harder questions before approving more of these systems, our take-action page has concrete steps to push back.
