Are We Becoming a Surveillance State?

Hit Pause with Star Price · 2 weeks ago

The short version: Star Price's video asks the right question—whether constant camera and plate-reader surveillance is reshaping American life—and the answer is already yes.

Our Take

Credit to Star Price for putting the question plainly: are we becoming a surveillance state? Here at DeFlock The USA, our answer is that the infrastructure is already built, it's just unevenly visible. License plate readers, facial recognition, and networked security cameras aren't some dystopian future — they're bolted to utility poles in thousands of towns right now, quietly logging where you drive, when, and how often, often without a warrant or public vote.

What makes Flock Safety's ALPR network especially worth watching is the business model: a private company selling local police departments a dragnet, then stitching those feeds into a searchable, cross-jurisdictional database. That's a fundamentally different animal than a single traffic cam. It means your movements in one county can be queried by cops two states away, with little transparency about who's looking, why, and how long the data sticks around.

If this video got you thinking about what's actually watching you, don't stop at the thought experiment. Check our camera map to see what's been documented near you, and head to our take-action page if you want to push back at a city council meeting or file a records request. Awareness is step one; organizing is what actually slows this down.
