Custom License Plate Recognition Box For Overseas Market
The short version: A Chinese manufacturer's demo of a custom ALPR 'black box' for export is a reminder that plate-reader hardware is a cheap, interchangeable commodity sold to anyone, anywhere.
Our Take
Lailin Smart Gate's video is a plain product demo, not a policy statement, but it's a useful window into the supply side of license plate surveillance. Credit to the channel for showing the hardware without the usual sales gloss: this is a generic "black box" built to spec for whoever's buying overseas. There's no mention of oversight, retention limits, or who the end customer is — because that's not the manufacturer's problem. It's ours.
This is the part of the ALPR story that rarely gets attention. Flock Safety and its American competitors get the headlines, but the actual camera modules, OCR chips, and recognition boards often trace back to contract manufacturers like this one, built fast and cheap and shipped to whichever government, HOA, or private security outfit has a purchase order. The brand on the pole may say Flock or Rekor, but the guts inside are increasingly commodity parts from factories that will build a "custom" surveillance box for anyone who pays — no questions about civil liberties required.
That's exactly why tracking where these cameras actually end up matters more than arguing about who manufactures them. Check our camera map to see what's been documented near you, and if you want to push back on new installations in your town, our take-action page has the tools to get started.
