DISH Network is Installing Surveillance Cameras at Lowe's?!

Dude Bros Podcast · 2 months ago

The short version: Dude Bros Podcast reportedly caught DISH Network technicians installing Flock ALPR cameras at Lowe's, another sign that license-plate surveillance is quietly expanding into everyday retail parking lots.

Our Take

Credit to the Dude Bros Podcast for pointing a camera at the cameras. Their footage of DISH Network techs allegedly installing Flock Safety ALPR units at Lowe's is a good reminder that this technology isn't just showing up on city streets anymore — it's creeping into big-box parking lots, often through third-party contractors most shoppers will never see coming.

Whether Lowe's is calling this "asset protection" or something else, the bigger issue is the same one we track everywhere: once a plate reader goes up, nobody outside the company (and whoever they share data with) really knows how long that footage is kept, who can query it, or whether it's feeding into a regional Flock network that police departments can also tap. "Loss prevention" and "surveillance dragnet" aren't mutually exclusive.

We don't have independent confirmation of the scope of this rollout, but it fits a pattern we've documented for a while — private companies installing ALPR infrastructure with little public disclosure. If you want to see what's already logged near you, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back on unchecked plate tracking in your community, our take-action guide is a good place to start.
