Florence announces suspension of Flock camera system

WLWT · 3 weeks ago

The short version: WLWT reports Florence has suspended its Flock Safety ALPR system, a rare reversal worth watching as a model for other towns.

Our Take

Credit to WLWT for flagging this one: Florence pulling the plug on its Flock camera network, even temporarily, is the kind of story that doesn't get enough airtime. Most local news coverage of these systems reads like a press release from Flock itself — more cameras, more "solved crimes," never much scrutiny. A suspension, whatever the reason behind it, is a sign that pushback from residents and officials can actually work.

We don't know yet whether this is a budget issue, a policy dispute, a data-sharing concern, or something else entirely, and we're not going to speculate past what's been reported. But every time a city council or department hits pause on an always-on license plate tracking system, it's worth asking the obvious follow-up: what did the suspension reveal about how the data was being used, who had access to it, and whether residents were ever told the full scope of the surveillance in the first place.

If you live near Florence or anywhere else running Flock infrastructure, check our camera map to see what's actually been deployed around you, and use our take-action resources to push your own local officials for the same kind of transparency this suspension is forcing into the open.
