Chainsaw Vandal Targets Flock Cameras, Laura Loomer Calls Censorship, Trump Cancels Attack, & MORE

Hard Lens Media · 2 months ago

The short version: Hard Lens Media rounds up a chainsaw attack on a Flock camera, a Loomer censorship spat, and a canceled Trump-related incident—proof the ALPR backlash is getting louder and weirder.

Our Take

Credit to Hard Lens Media for keeping a running tally of how fractured and messy the Flock Safety story has become. A chainsaw taken to a camera pole is the kind of headline that grabs attention, but it's really just the loudest expression of a quieter, more widespread frustration: people did not vote for a private company's network of cameras logging every car that passes through their town, and plenty are done waiting for city councils to do something about it.

The Laura Loomer censorship angle and the Trump-related cancellation are murkier and we're not going to pretend to know the full story from a headline reel — but the fact that ALPR coverage is now tangled up with partisan media fights shows how mainstream this issue has become. Surveillance infrastructure that used to be a wonky local-government story is now national culture-war fodder, which cuts both ways: more eyeballs, but also more noise drowning out the actual policy questions about retention periods, data sharing, and who gets access to these feeds.

Vandalism isn't a strategy and we don't endorse it, but the anger behind it is legitimate and worth channeling somewhere that actually works. Check our camera map to see what's watching your own neighborhood, and head to take-action for ways to push back that don't end with someone facing felony charges.
