Crypto deepfakes need to watch

Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency · 1 month ago

The short version: A video on crypto deepfakes reminds us that manufactured fear over fraud is often the opening argument for expanding biometric ID and surveillance infrastructure, ALPRs included.

Our Take

Credit to the Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency channel for digging into crypto deepfakes — a topic that sounds niche but plugs straight into the bigger surveillance story we track every day. The pitch is always the same: a scary new fraud problem emerges, and the proposed fix just happens to require everyone hand over more biometric data, more identity verification, more centralized tracking. Deepfakes get used to sell digital ID the same way 'public safety' gets used to sell a Flock Safety camera on every corner.

We don't fact-check every claim in a 400-video channel built on 'do your own research,' and we're not going to pretend we can verify the specifics here. But the pattern is worth sitting with: panic about synthetic fraud, synthetic identity theft, synthetic everything becomes the justification for real, permanent infrastructure — infrastructure that doesn't go away once the panic fades. ALPR networks were sold the same way, as a narrow tool for stolen cars and AMBER Alerts, and now they're logging the movements of ordinary people nationwide with almost no oversight.

If you want to see how much of that infrastructure has already landed in your own neighborhood, check our camera map. And if you're ready to push back against the quiet buildout of automated tracking — financial, biometric, or license plate — our take-action page has concrete next steps.
