Flock Cameras & Data Centers: Are We Being Watched

Raw After Dark · 1 month ago

The short version: Raw After Dark asks how much Flock and data centers really know about us — the honest answer is: more than most people assume.

Our Take

Credit to Raw After Dark for sitting down and asking the question most people never bother to: where does all this ALPR data actually go once it's collected? It's a fair question, and one we think doesn't get asked enough on late-night talk formats like this. Flock Safety's pitch to city councils is always the same — "we're just reading plates, not tracking people" — but the reality is that a nationwide network of cameras logging every passing vehicle, timestamped and location-tagged, amounts to a rolling record of where you've been and when, aggregated in data centers you have no access to and no say over.

That's the part that should unsettle viewers more than any single camera on a pole: this isn't local policing anymore, it's infrastructure. Flock's cloud backend means your town's "public safety tool" is plugged into a much bigger system, shared across agencies and jurisdictions with varying rules about who can query it and why. Once that data exists, it exists for subpoenas, for data breaches, for mission creep nobody voted on.

If this video got you wondering whether there's a Flock camera already clocking your commute, check our camera map to see what's been documented near you, and visit our take-action page if you want to push back at the local level before the network gets any bigger.
