Manor ending use of Flock Safety cameras

KVUE · 1 month ago

The short version: Manor, Texas joins a growing wave of Central Texas cities cutting ties with Flock Safety, proof that local pushback on ALPR surveillance is working.

Our Take

Credit to KVUE for tracking this one closely — Manor pulling the plug on its Flock Safety cameras isn't an isolated blip, it's part of a pattern spreading across Central Texas as city councils start asking harder questions about what these networks actually do, who can access the data, and whether the promised crime-fighting results hold up. When one city reverses course, it hands every neighboring council a template and a talking point: if Manor could walk away, why can't we?

This matters because Flock's pitch to small towns is almost always the same — low cost, low effort, big safety payoff — while the actual tradeoff is a permanent record of every car that passes through town, shared across a growing patchwork of police departments and, increasingly, federal agencies. Once that infrastructure is installed, it rarely gets scrutinized again unless residents and local reporters force the issue, which is exactly what seems to be happening here.
