Flock CEO Wants To Audit The Police | That's His INSANE Accountability Solution...

Nico Lagan · 1 month ago

The short version: Flock's CEO pitches 'auditing' police use of his own cameras as accountability, but self-reporting by the vendor profiting from surveillance isn't oversight.

Our Take

Credit to Nico Lagan for flagging this one, because it's a tidy example of how Flock Safety tries to answer hard questions about police misuse of ALPR data: with a product pitch. The company's answer to 'who watches the watchers' is apparently more Flock software, built and sold by Flock. That's not independent oversight, that's a vendor marking its own homework.

Real accountability means public, searchable audit logs reviewed by people who don't have a financial stake in the system looking good, elected bodies that can shut off access when it's abused, and communities that actually get to vote on whether these cameras go up at all. An 'audit tool' baked into the same platform that profits from more cameras and more data-sharing doesn't fix the incentive problem, it just gives departments a shinier way to say they're compliant.
