Axon Presents: Real-Time Event Protection

Axon · 1 year ago

The short version: Axon's slick promo for 'real-time event protection' is really a pitch to blanket stadiums, festivals, and cultural gatherings with always-on surveillance infrastructure.

Our Take

Axon's new reel dresses up mass surveillance in the language of public safety: wire a stadium, a festival, a cultural celebration into a live feed that cops can watch in real time. It's slick corporate messaging, and we'll credit Axon for production value, but strip away the drone shots and soft music and what you're left with is a pitch for permanent surveillance infrastructure at the exact places where people gather to exercise free speech, celebrate their culture, or just enjoy a Saturday. That's not a neutral security upgrade — it's a normalization campaign.

These 'event protection' systems don't ask who's watching the watchers. Once cameras, ALPRs, and real-time crime center feeds get installed for a festival, they rarely get uninstalled after the festival ends. The infrastructure lingers, the data pools grow, and local agencies quietly fold temporary 'event security' into permanent monitoring networks — often without a public vote or a retention policy anyone can read. Axon knows this is a growth market precisely because it never really goes away.

If you want to see how far this kind of network has already spread in your own city, check our camera map. And if you'd rather your next block party not become a permanent node in a corporate surveillance system, our take-action guide walks you through pushing back before the cameras go up for good.
