Flock of birds means more eyes for safety

Nature of Music · 6 days ago

The short version: A nature video about birds flocking for safety shares a name with Flock Safety but nothing else — the real flock of cameras watching you is far less benign.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: Nature of Music's video is a pleasant little explainer about why birds gather in flocks — more eyes to spot predators, more eyes to find food. It has nothing to do with automated license plate readers, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Sometimes a flock is just a flock.

But the naming coincidence is worth a beat of irony. Real birds flock voluntarily, for mutual protection, and they can leave the flock whenever they want. The cameras bearing the Flock Safety name offer no such choice to the people driving past them. You don't opt in, you don't get more protection from being watched, and you can't fly off to another neighborhood to escape the data collection — these networks increasingly span county lines and entire states.

So enjoy the bird video for what it is. Then take a look at our map to see how many non-voluntary 'eyes' are actually posted near you, and check take-action if you'd rather not be part of someone else's flock.
