Credit to the channel Eye On Margate for actually sitting through a city commission meeting so the rest of us don't have to. Their clip captures something we see over and over in towns adopting Flock Safety gear: a commissioner asks a plain, reasonable question — is this a Fourth Amendment problem? — and the city attorney's answer is vague enough to keep the program moving without ever really settling it. That's not an accident. Most ALPR rollouts survive on ambiguity, not on clear legal footing.

What stands out here is the split on the dais itself. You've got a mayor eager to blanket the city with more cameras, and at least one commissioner willing to push back and ask whether residents are being scanned and logged without meaningful oversight or consent. That's exactly the kind of friction local surveillance expansion should get, and far too often doesn't. Most councils just rubber-stamp the vendor pitch.

Margate residents deserve a real answer to Commissioner Ruzzano's question, not a lawyerly shrug.
