π₯ 8MP Varifocal CCTV Camera Number Plate Test | Long Distance Number Plate Recognition
The short version: A consumer electronics demo shows how a basic 8MP varifocal CCTV camera can clearly capture license plates at long range, no 'official' ALPR system required.
Our Take
Credit to Karanveer Gupta for a straightforward demo: point an off-the-shelf 8MP varifocal CCTV camera down a road, zoom in, and watch plain license plates resolve from a serious distance. There's no Flock Safety branding here, no law enforcement contract, no city council vote β just retail hardware anyone can buy and bolt to a pole. That's exactly the point. The gap between 'consumer camera' and 'automated plate reader' has basically collapsed.
This matters because the public debate around ALPR surveillance tends to focus on big-name vendors and police procurement. But the underlying capability β resolving a plate at 50, 100, 150+ feet β is now cheap, exportable, and installable by literally anyone with a varifocal lens and a ladder. Businesses, landlords, neighbors, and yes, government agencies are all drawing from the same commodity hardware pool. Oversight rules written around one vendor's name don't keep up with a market where any camera can become a tracking node overnight.
