How Cops Use License Plate Readers to Catch You โ€“ Real-Time ALPR Demo ๐Ÿ“ธ

Everyday Real Talk · 7 months ago

The short version: A YouTuber's real-time ALPR demo confirms what we've been saying: these cameras log every driver, innocent or not, with pinpoint precision.

Our Take

Credit to Everyday Real Talk for pulling back the curtain on what's actually happening every time you drive past one of these solar-powered poles. Screenshots showing GPS coordinates, timestamps, and instant plate matches aren't hypothetical privacy concerns anymoreโ€”they're a live demo of the exact dataset being built on every driver, guilty or not, who happens to pass by.

The pitch is always the same: catch stolen cars, uninsured drivers, active warrants. What gets left out of that pitch is the 99% of scans that belong to people doing nothing wrong, sitting in a database that can be queried, shared across agencies, or breached. "Real-time" isn't just a feature for catching bad guysโ€”it's a permanent record of where you were and when, whether you ever get pulled over or not.

If a video like this makes you want to know whether your own street has one of these cameras watching it, check our map to see what's already been documented near you, and visit our take-action page if you want to push back on unchecked ALPR expansion in your community.
