RayHunter: Your Privacy Guardian #shorts

STS Technologies LLC · 2 months ago

The short version: A short from STS Technologies LLC spotlights RayHunter, EFF's open-source IMSI catcher detector, a reminder that cell-site simulators and ALPRs are two heads of the same surveillance beast.

Our Take

Credit to STS Technologies LLC for putting a spotlight on RayHunter, the Electronic Frontier Foundation's open-source tool for sniffing out suspicious cellular activity that can indicate a Stingray or other IMSI catcher is nearby. These devices impersonate cell towers to trick your phone into connecting, letting whoever is operating them log identifiers and sometimes intercept traffic, all without you ever knowing your phone wasn't talking to a real network.

We cover license plate readers because they're cheap, proliferating fast, and largely invisible to the public, but cell-site simulators are cut from the same cloth: opaque hardware, murky legal standards, and agencies that would rather you not ask questions. Tools like RayHunter matter because they put detection capability back in the hands of ordinary people instead of leaving it solely with the agencies deploying the tech. That said, we'd note this video doubles as a product pitch for a pre-flashed device sold through a commercial storefront, so do your own research on vendor trustworthiness before buying anything tied to your phone's radio baseband.

If you're mapping out surveillance infrastructure in your area, cell-site simulators are a lot harder to spot than a camera bolted to a pole. Start with what you can actually see and document: check our camera map for known ALPR locations near you, and if you want to push back on surveillance creep in your community, our take-action page has concrete steps for organizing against it.
