Flock Cameras, AI & Data Centers: The Questions Nobody Is Asking | Summer Deep Dive

Darren Hamilton | Libertarian Dad · 3 months ago

The short version: Darren Hamilton connects Flock ALPRs to AI and data-center buildout, arguing surveillance infrastructure is one interconnected system nobody's scrutinizing as a whole.

Our Take

Darren Hamilton's framing in this Libertarian Dad deep dive is the kind of big-picture thinking we wish more outlets did: Flock cameras don't exist in a vacuum. They feed into AI pattern-matching systems, which require server farms and data centers, which get justified by "smart city" planning documents — and at every layer, the public gets a sliver of the story while city councils get a sales pitch. Treating ALPR deployment as an isolated "public safety tool" conversation, divorced from the AI training and data-retention pipeline behind it, is exactly how Flock has expanded to thousands of communities with so little scrutiny.

The questions Hamilton raises about who's actually processing this data, where it lives, and what AI models get trained on years of accumulated plate-read history are ones we've been asking too. Flock markets itself as a local decision made by your police department, but the backend is a private company's infrastructure, increasingly intertwined with federal data-sharing and third-party analytics nobody voted on. That's the mass-surveillance bait-and-switch: hyperlocal sales pitch, national-scale data architecture.

Credit to Hamilton for connecting dots that usually get debated in separate silos. If you want to see how far this infrastructure has already spread near you, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back at the local level, our take-action page has a starting point.
