License Plate Unlock Finally Works
The short version: A DIY gate-unlocking demo from IT Geekman shows how trivially easy license plate recognition has become—for better or worse.
Our Take
IT Geekman's project is a classic maker win: UniFi gear, some patience, and now a gate that swings open when it recognizes a plate. Credit where it's due—getting consumer hardware to do real-time ALPR for a personal driveway is a solid hack, and it's a world away from what Flock Safety deploys on public roads.
But the video is also a useful reminder of just how commoditized license plate recognition has become. If a hobbyist can wire this up for a single gate on a weekend, imagine the ease with which companies and governments scale the same core technology across entire cities, pairing it with cloud storage, cross-jurisdiction data sharing, and law enforcement access. The gap between "cool smart-home trick" and "mass surveillance infrastructure" is smaller than most people assume—it's really just a matter of how many cameras you network together and who gets to query the results.
That's the distinction worth sitting with: a private gate camera that only you control is nothing like a government-adjacent network logging every car that passes a public intersection. If you want to see how dense that networked version has gotten in your own neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you'd rather do something about it, our take-action page has concrete next steps.
