Fox Nashville's segment (credit to their newsroom for putting a local lens on this) gets at something we've said for a while: Flock Safety only moves when the heat gets bad enough. The company's newly announced "safeguards" arrive right on cue as public scrutiny mounts, and the fact that a third party had to build a tool just so drivers can find out if their own plate got searched tells you everything about how opaque this system has been from day one.
Being able to check if you've been "Flocked" is a neat trick, but it's a band-aid, not a fix. It puts the burden on citizens to go digging for answers about a surveillance dragnet they never consented to, instead of requiring real transparency and audit trails up front. Cosmetic policy tweaks don't change the fundamental problem: thousands of cameras logging every plate that passes, with searches happening behind closed doors and minimal independent oversight.
