How Chamblee Police Used Flock to Cut Traffic Accidents in Half

Flock · 6 months ago

The short version: Flock's own promotional video credits its cameras with halving Chamblee, GA traffic accidents, but the claim comes straight from the company selling the system, not an independent study.

Our Take

Notice who's telling this story: Flock Safety, marketing its own product, on its own channel, with a police department that just bought its system. That's not journalism, it's a sales reel. When a company grades its own homework and the answer is always "it works," readers should ask for the underlying data, the time period, the confounding factors (new signage? enforcement blitzes? seasonal shifts?) before accepting "traffic accidents cut in half" as fact.

There's also a quieter story here about mission creep. Flock cameras were sold to cities as a "crime-solving tool" for stolen cars and Amber Alerts. Now they're being repositioned as traffic-safety infrastructure, which conveniently expands the case for blanketing every intersection with always-on plate readers that log the movements of every driver, guilty or not, forever searchable by any agency with access. Safety framing is how surveillance networks grow without a public vote on the surveillance part.

Chamblee residents deserve real answers: what data was used, who audited it, and how long images are retained and shared. Check our camera map to see if Flock has already landed in your town, and visit take action for tools to push your city council for transparency and audits before the next "crime-solving" pitch turns into a permanent surveillance grid.
