😳More Flock Cameras deployed in the RGV.

Joshua Moroles · 4 months ago

The short version: A local creator spots fresh Flock ALPR installs across the Rio Grande Valley, another sign the surveillance net is quietly expanding border to border.

Our Take

Credit to Joshua Moroles for doing what so few local reporters bother to do anymore: actually driving around and documenting new Flock Safety cameras as they go up in the Rio Grande Valley. This is exactly the kind of boots-on-the-ground tracking that keeps communities informed, because Flock doesn't exactly send out press releases every time it bolts another ALPR to a pole.

The RGV is a telling place for this buildout. It's a region already saturated with federal immigration enforcement, Border Patrol checkpoints, and state trooper presence under Operation Lone Star. Layering automated license plate readers on top of that infrastructure means every additional camera isn't just a local policing tool — it's another node that can be queried, shared, or subpoenaed by agencies far outside the city council that approved it. Once that data exists in Flock's network, local officials lose control over who ends up using it.

If you're in South Texas or anywhere else wondering whether your street has one of these cameras, check our map to see what's already been documented nearby, and visit our take-action page for ways to push back at the city council level before the next contract renewal sails through unnoticed.
