City of Lilburn chooses Flock Safety to fight crime

Flock · 5 years ago

The short version: Flock's own channel reposts an 11Alive segment on Lilburn, Georgia adopting its ALPR network, offering a one-sided pitch with no independent scrutiny.

Our Take

Notice who's doing the talking here. This clip comes straight from Flock Safety's own YouTube channel, repackaging a local news segment that first aired on 11Alive. When the company that sells the cameras is also the one distributing the "news" coverage of its own product, that's not journalism — it's marketing with a press pass. Lilburn city officials get airtime to praise the system, but there's no mention of cost, data retention policy, who else gets access to the footage, or what independent crime data actually shows.

This is the pattern we see city after city: a vendor-friendly local news hit, a few quotes from police about feeling safer, and a quiet rollout of a camera network that logs the comings and goings of every driver in town — innocent or not. Lilburn residents deserve to know how long their plate scans are stored, whether Flock shares that data with federal agencies or other police departments, and what oversight exists if the system is misused. None of that gets addressed in a segment produced for a sales pitch.
